It's interesting that another series that fits pretty much all your descriptions is Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern. I didn't love the first one, but I really liked Dragonsdawn, and I think that reading that one (about the colonist origins of humanity on Pern) paired with the others, which are pseudo-medieval, you get an interesting setup for a lot of the issues you mention.<br /><br />Also, I have Hyperion on my reader but haven't read it yet.
